Selena Coneally opened with a question: Where does our energy come from? She set up a hands-on demonstration to show how our current energy grid isn’t very smart, what with threats from cyber attacks, wildfire, lightning strikes, and even squirrels! Participants learned how a new smart grid allows us to use greener energy like solar and wind power. It includes meters to let the power company optimize and store energy flow, such as turning down your air conditioning two degrees during peak hours.
Hands on Activity
Participants debated and persuaded with card prompts, cajoling their peers to accept one iteration of the energy grid over another. Is nuclear better than wind? Are incentives better than fines?
