Puerto Rico’s First Teen Science Café Is Teen-Powered and Thriving

Imagine a space where science feels exciting, hands-on, and completely teen-powered. That’s exactly what’s happening in Puerto Rico.

When I connected with the team behind Puerto Rico’s very first Teen Science Café, I quickly realized this isn’t just about STEM content — it’s about youth leadership in action.

Students like Amira Figueroa, Daniel Martínez, and Javier Rivera are diving into robotics projects, chemistry demonstrations, fungi research with professors, and career conversations with engineers and industry professionals. They’ve partnered with the American Chemical Society and even hosted a mechanical engineer who is also a DJ, showing that STEM careers can be creative and multidimensional.

But what stood out most wasn’t just what they were learning.

It was how they were growing.

As Amira Figueroa, an eighth-grade host, shared,
“It’s not just class. There’s more fieldwork, more hands-on experiences.”

That difference matters.

Because when students are building, testing, and leading, they’re not just learning science. They’re building communication, collaboration, and confidence.

Amira reflected on how planning the café strengthened her skills, saying,
“Planning the café helped me grow in teamwork and communication.”

Daniel Martínez, a ninth-grade mentor, shared how stepping into a teaching role pushed him to grow.
“I learned how to explain things so younger students could understand.”

That’s not passive participation.

That’s skill-building in real time.

As teens host events, guide discussions, and mentor younger students, they’re practicing the very skills that prepare them for future pathways:

  • Clear communication

  • Team collaboration

  • Leadership

  • Adaptability

  • Critical thinking

These aren’t just academic skills. They are real-world skills that prepare youth for college, careers, and community leadership.

One leader shared a line that perfectly captures their model:
“You can learn math and engineering from books. But to learn how to work with people, you have to work with people.”

And that’s exactly what’s happening in Puerto Rico.

Through mixed-age mentorship, hands-on challenges, and youth-led programming, students aren’t just exploring STEM careers; they’re also developing the skills to succeed in them. They’re building durable skills that will carry them into any field.

The team is already planning to expand into forensic science, marine science, veterinary pathways, and advanced robotics. When students express curiosity, the response isn’t “maybe someday.”

It’s “Let’s make it happen.”

And as the first Teen Science Café in Puerto Rico, they’re doing this work while building connections across our national network and growing their local impact.

As one leader said,
“We have limited resources alone. But when we work together, we have unlimited resources.”

Puerto Rico’s Teen Science Café isn’t just hosting events.

They’re cultivating confidence.
They’re strengthening leadership.
They’re preparing young people for whatever comes NEXT.

And this is only the beginning.
