Café Space: The Challenges of Building Systems for Space

October 14 | 3:30 pm - 4:45 pm EDT

Space is vast. Exploration of space is both intriguing and perilous, requiring a firm understanding of the space environment and the challenges associated with it. Everything from micrometers to radiation and thermal cycles pose unique challenges in how we explore the cosmos- limiting our engineering, robotic communication, and human capabilities. In this virtual Teen Science Café, John Holleran will talk about the science of the space environment and the limiting factors, tying the science in with the practical engineering of satellites and spacecraft. He will reference lessons learned from spacecraft, as well as mitigation and applications for the future. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of what space is like and find the topic more approachable.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: Having graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Vermont Technical College (VTC) in May of 2020, John Holleran is pursuing a career in the space industry, applying knowledge of space to the engineering challenges of spacecraft. He recently worked virtually as an engineering intern at NASA’s Glenn Research Center.

What is a Virtual Teen Science Café? It is a free, fun way for teens to explore science, engineering and technology with local scientists, engineers and technology experts. Teens will “meet a scientist”, learn about their work, and be able to participate in informal discussions.
